‘Coaming’ and ‘Camber’ are a new series of ceramic vessels by Aphra O’Connor that celebrate the enduring local boat building industry in Whitby, North Yorkshire.
The sculptures follow the construction of a new fishing vessel at the Parkol Marine engineering site.
At each stage the construction of the boat has been documented by the artist, with the works referencing the various techniques employed in the boat building process. The forms of the vessels isolate the geometric ribcage of the boat’s hull and the glazes explore the varying, and sometimes surprisingly vivid colours used.
Ceramics feature as a method of recording the forms found on the site. By indenting and creating repeating patterns on ceramic, O’Connor seeks to open a dialogue between the traditional nature of making and more industrial modes of manufacture.
Aphra O‘Connor lives and works in Sleights, Whitby, UK.
