WORKSHOP: PRINTMAKING – Introduction to Linocut
Led by Clare Nattress
Wednesday 15th March 2017, 5.30 – 9pm

This workshop will be a beginners guide to Linocut Printmaking. Clare will help you plan, execute and complete a print in an evening using linocut. We will cover how to plan a design and transfer it to the lino; how to cut the lino; how to ink up the lino and how to print it. Students will be shown how to burnish the prints by hand. This way you can easily replicate the process at home with minimal equipment. You will also learn how to correctly register your prints so that each layer of colour lies directly on top of the previous layer. All experiments and final works can be taken home to enjoy.

Linocut, or linoleum block printing, is a diverse and flexible medium that can range from graphic, single-colour designs to subtle and complex interpretations. Beautiful results can be produced with simple, low-tech, and inexpensive tools. The Reduction Method is the one that we will use. In a reduction print the artist develops all colours from the same block. The artist must print the entire edition as they work, because the printable area of the single block is reduced with each colour pass.

Price: £45 pp (all materials, soup, sandwiches and coffee/tea provided)

WORKSHOP: INTRODUCTION TO ABSTRACT DRAWING
Led by Clare Nattress
Wednesday 10th May 2017, 5.30 – 9pm

Qualified tutor and artist Clare Nattress will show you a range of techniques to explore abstract themes in different mediums from drawing, collage and relief work. With tasks based around nature, landscape and music, the workshop will explore the process of abstraction, ways in which to achieve this as well as the contextual and historical background of the Abstract Expressionist movement and its leading pioneers such as Ben Nicholson and Wassily Kandinsky.

Clare will lead you through processes of line drawings looking at landscape photography and using layout pads to achieve abstract compositions. Next we will experiment with block colours using sugar paper and textured paper working from our original line drawings to inform this. The use of colour palette and composition will be explored. After this we will work with greyboard / mountboard to produce layered relief work building our own assemblages in the style of Ben Nicholson. The last technique will be inspired by one of the founding fathers of abstract expressionism and will involve drawing whilst listening to a variety of music from Jazz to Mongolian throat.
Price: £45 pp (all materials, soup, sandwiches and coffee/tea provided)
